Driefontein community on the rampage

"I had to walk for kilometers through the sugarcane to catch a taxi."

Driefontein residents not wishing to take part in the protest action are being forced to trek through the sugarcane in order to get to work.

The mass protest, that started last Monday, resumed again in the early hours of this morning.

A Driefontein resident (30) said is was frightening leaving her child with his minder with the township in such a state of unrest.

“They have blocked all the roads in and out of the township. I had to walk for kilometers through the sugarcane to catch a taxi,” she said.

Fourteen residents were arrested last week Wednesday for public violence after the community hall was torched.

The community are reportedly unhappy with the ANC candidates selected to represent them.

“They are demanding that the mayor address them.”
