Isithebe protesters started toyi-toying and became unruly at the meeting in the Sibusiswe community hall in Sundumbili township where provincial leaders met them.
Courier journalist at the meeting, Jacqueline Herbst, said the ANC and SACP leaders who arrived to ask for a halt to protest action, have caucused to find a way forward.
“They left the meeting venue when protesters refused to negotiate unless the 120 people arrested earlier this week are released and have not returned. It appears a cellphone message was sent to protesters who are now becoming unruly,” she said.
“They challenged riot police to come and get them and have started throwing stones at the riot police who are retaliating by firing rubber bullets and setting off smoke bombs and tear gas.
“Protesters have again blocked roads. Police are trying to drive the rioters back.”
Avoid the area.
