VIDEOS: Heavens open on Dolphin Coast

A downpour of rain gave a brief reprieve from the severe drought.

A surprise deluge of rain last night brought flash floods and a much needed breather from the severe drought to the Dolphin Coast.

In the Tongaat area a man was rescued last night when his vehicle was washed into a river between Tongaat and Amanzimyamma.

The Hazelmere Dam has risen slightly to 26.6 percent after receiving 28.2 millimetres of rain.

Measured rainfall in and around Ballito ranged from 12 millimetres in Ballito to 103 millimetres in Tinley Manor.

Swimming pools and small dams overflowed and an embankment in Barrier Lane, Sheffield Beach washed away.

“A guy in Barrier Lane has five tons of sand in his house from the collapsed embankment at a newly built house,” said Colin Marsh, Ballito ward Councillor.

Di Jones, Dolphin Coast Conservancy chairperson, said her team was working hard to repair soil erosion caused by the downpour all over town.

Children living in Ezulwini Estate, Salt Rock, where 70 millimeters of rain flooded the dam, had fun body boarding in flooded streets.
