Driver washed into a Tongaat river

Heavy rains have swollen the banks of local rivers.

A human chain was made to rescue a man from his vehicle after he was swept into a swollen river between Tongaat and Amanzimyamma on Tuesday night.

Heavy rains have been falling in the drought stricken area for a few days.

IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson Samantha Meyrick the vehicle was washed into the river while the driver attempted to cross a low level bridge.

“The vehicle was swept away by the current leaving the driver trapped inside. All the electrics short circuited and he could not open the doors or windows. He managed to kick out a window and climb to the top of the canopy,” said Meyrick.

Paramedics and emergency workers formed a chain and coached the driver off the roof of his vehicle.

He was grabbed and pulled to safety by the paramedics.
