Ballito businesses accused of electricity tampering

KwaDukuza municipality are randomly inspecting Ballito businesses for alleged electricity tampering.

Two prominent Ballito businesses received unexpected visits from KwaDukuza municipality workers last week, accusing them of tampering with their electricity boxes.

According to Hirsch’s media liaison Glenda Thompson, about 20 men from the municipality arrived last Tuesday stating that the branch had been tampering with the electricity box to reduce their cost of power.

Hirsch CEO, Margaret Hirsch, said the machine that was supposedly tampered with is in a sealed, locked cabinet and only the municipality have the keys.

“Only the municipality has access to the cabinet, so how could we have tampered with it?” said Hirsch.

The following day, a group of about 20 men arrived at The Well and demanded access to the meter room.

The body corporate chairman, Dr Kevin Stevens, was contacted and went to The Well.

On his arrival, the man in charge demanded to have access to the electricity meter room, because they were looking for illegal electricity connections.

“They were trespassing and their behaviour made the patrons at The Well feel uncomfortable,” said Stevens.

Dr Stevens opened the meter room and no illegal connections were found.

Neither businesses were notified about the inspection.

The municipality has not yet commented.
