Emona residents not happy

Residents resort to illegal connections due to shortage of electricity.

Residents of Emona described their area as a “forgotten area” due to shortage of water, electricity, transport issues and the bad condition of the main road in their area.

These issues were brought to the attention on Ethekwini municipality ward 61 councillor Michael Abraham on Sunday, June 14 when he held a meeting with a group of residents at the municipal building in Tongaat.

The shortage of electricity in the area has forced residents in the informal settlements of Emona to connect electricity illegally and people die due to the illegal connections.

Abraham said the community should form a team for each issue that was raised and he will assist them to get the matter sorted.

“We need to deal with the issues peacefully and as a councillor I am willing to assist in all means,” said Abraham.

Twenty-four residents of Emona Staren section were arrested for public violence after they blocked the main road in Tongaat last year October.

They were protesting after half brothers Zenzele Malinga (23) and Thamsanqa Zungu ( 19), and their friend Ngane Langa died when they were trying to connect electricity illegally.
