Prayers for eight dead from Shaka’s Head

Mass solidarity prayer meeting for family who died on the roads over Easter.

The KwaDukuza council held a mass solidarity prayer meeting in tribute to the eight Shaka’s Head residents who were killed over the Easter weekend.

Five members of the Ngubane family of six were wiped out on April 4 in a car accident on their way to visiting family in Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape. The accident happened near Port Shepstone when the car in which they had been travelling collided with another car on the R61.

Manxiweni (41) and her children Nomvula (20), Fezeka (17), Sphelele (14) and Minenhle Ngubane (4) died at the scene and the head of the family, Joshua Ngubane (53), is recovering in hospital.

A spate of crimes in the area resulted in three more deaths. The details of these three victims have not yet been confirmed.

“We have been working with the bereaved families in helping them find solace in the knowledge that these are the times when company is needed most,” said ward four councillor, Jetro Banda at the memorial service held on Wednesday, April 15 and organised by the KwaDukuza municipality with the four families and the community.

He said they were finding it very hard to come to terms with the tragedy.

“Death is one of the common tragedies in society which is very hard to accept,” he said.

Banda said he hoped the healing process would help the community find peace.

He said the incidents came shortly after a public road safety campaign had been launched.

“This is unfortunate and a major setback to Operation Vimbingozi which was rolled out just before Easter,” said council’s chief whip, Dumisani Ndimande.

KwaDukuza councillors visited the community on Friday to pay tribute to those who have lost their lives and to send their condolences to the families who lost their loved ones.
