WATCH: Political protest shuts down KwaDukuza municipality office

The protest is reportedly due to internal conflicts within the local African National Congress.

A protest forced the closure of the KwaDukuza municipality offices in Stanger this morning.

The protest was allegedly over the provincial executive of the African National Congress’ alleged intention to put the former secretary of the Youth League’s, Musa Zondi, back in his position of regional secretary.

An ANC member, who asked to remain anonymous, told the Courier that the party was divided locally on the issue.

“Those against the decision are upset because the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) would be going against the constitution of the ANC, which states that a member who has been found guilty and sentenced for more than 12 months, cannot lead the ANC,” said the member.

Zondi was found guilty and sentenced for murder and kidnapping at the Pietermaritzburg High Court last year October.

He later appealed and is currently out on bail.

However ANC regional deputy secretary of the General Gizenga Mpanza Region (Ilembe) Matozi Khuzwayo Dlamini said the PEC had not discussed Zondi’s reappointment so it was unclear as to where the protesters had received their information.

The protest began this morning and roads coming in and out of the town were blocked with burning tyres.

KwaDukuza municipality announced that due to the protest, which has nothing to do with the municipality, they had been forced to close.

As a result, services will be temporarily disrupted.

“These precautionary measures were taken in consideration of the safety of the municipality’s staff, their assets and clients.

“Further information will be communicated once there are new developments.

“The inconvenience of this unplanned closure has caused is regretted,” said media liaison Sipho Mkhize.
