UPDATE: DA victorious in Ward 22

The DA's Privi Makhan claimed 94.3 percent of the votes in the ward.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) secured a convincing victory in yesterday’s KwaDukuza Ward 22 (Salt Rock, Chaka’s Rock, Sheffield and Umhlali) by-elections, the Independent Electoral Commission announced today.

The DA’s Privi Makhan claimed 94.3 percent of the votes in the ward, while the ANC’s Geoff Chennells took 5.7 percent of the vote.

A total of 910 residents cast their votes at the Sizani Combined School voting station and 1052 at the Salt Rock Library voting station.

The DA retained its stronghold in the ward increasing its vote by an additional 22 percent from the 2016 local elections.

In a statement to the Courier the DA’s Dean Mcpherson who represents the Ilembe District for the DA in the National Assembly in Cape Town, said: “Privi Makhan has the experience as well as the dedication to the voters and service delivery and is the ideal person to represent the DA in this ward.

“This solidifies my belief that we are on track to bring the ruling party under 50 percent in KwaDukuza and that voters believe it is possible.

“The increased majority result signifies the beginning of our two year campaign to form a new government in the KwaDukuza municipality.

The Ward 22 by-election was called after it became vacant due to the death of the previous DA ward councillor, Malcolm Hubner.

*Correction: We previously stated that a total of 910 residents cast their votes, however the total for both stations is 1 962.
