KwaDukuza officials banned from blue light brigades

According to the road traffic act, mayors, councillors and officials are not allowed to speed or attach blue lights to their vehicles.

Local government officials have no choice but to sit in traffic with the rest of us and those caught using blue emergency lights and speeding passed other motorists, could be arrested.

KwaDukuza councilors were warned recently in council that according to the road traffic act, mayors, councillors and officials are not allowed to make use of the emergency light or exceed the speed limit.

The document submitted to council notes: “Only a vehicle operated by a traffic officer, police officer or a member of the defense force in the execution of his or her duties may be fitted with or have a blue light. They may exceed the speed limit.”

The traffic act also allows for the premier, MECs, the speaker of the provincial legislature and the president to have blue lights fitted to their vehicles.

Previously, some members of the council have been spotted making use of the blue light and speeding through traffic.

Umhlali SAPS captain Vinny Pillay said anyone who was caught using the emergency light or speeding would be arrested.

“The police make use of this light, along with sirens to get through traffic in the case of an emergency. This should not be abused.”
