Municipal workers leave Salt Rock beach in a terrible state
The picnic area was littered with empty KFC boxes, coke bottles and plastic packets.
Litter was strewn across Salt Rock Beach by municipal employees during a government event yesterday, outraging residents.
Ballito Ward 6 councillor Tammy Colley said the function – a beach picnic – was organised by the provincial department of sports and recreation.
Municipal workers from across Ilembe, including KwaDukuza, Ndedwe and Mandeni were in attendance.

When the function was over the picnic area – which contains numerous rubbish bins – was littered with empty KFC boxes, coke bottles and plastic packets.
“The event was a woman’s day celebration but it should have been a given that the area be cleaned up after.
“The mess was absolutely disgusting and should not have been left on the beach.
“I have informed the municipality about the issue,” said Colley.
Salt Rock residents complained bitterly about the state of the beach.
Ron Warwick of Salt Rock said: “Maybe next time they should consider having their functions at KwaDukuza landfill site, which would be much more suitable.”
KwaDukuza municipality media liaison officer Sipho Mkhize said the municipality had been made aware of the problem.
“The event concluded late yesterday afternoon and our staff had already gone off duty by then.”
The litter was cleaned up early this morning.
