Ambitious plans for Nonoti Beach

Nonoti was chosen since it is a popular fishing spot and has space to accommodate the upgrades.

Planning is underway to revamp Nonoti Beach to a state of the art facility – on par with the Durban beachfront.

Despite promises from KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu that the notorious Blythedale beach festival would move to Nonoti last year, the upgrade to the beach facility is unlikely to be ready in time.

Mthembu said work at Nonoti Beach would start at the beginning of this year but this has not been the case.

Situated 25 kilometres from Stanger between Blythedale and Zinkwazi, the proposed plan for Nonoti includes a recreational area, children’s facility, parking area, conservation and braai area.

Board walks, seating areas, an amphitheatre, bicycle and skateboard track, a swimming pool and arts and craft area are on the cards.

Nonoti was chosen since it is a popular fishing spot and has space to accommodate the upgrades.

The contractor, Nyeileti Consulting Engineers presented a feasibility study for the planning, design and implementation of the Nonoti beach node development KwaDukuza council two weeks ago.

There are currently no facilities or lifeguards at the beach.

Construction work has not started and a budget for the project has yet to be finalised.

However, DA chief whip in Ilembe Malcolm Huber said he did not think the council had the money for the huge upgrade in the 2018/2019 financial year.

“The upgrade is set as a priority as Nonoti was identified as one of the beach nodes to uplift tourism and economic development, but the council has taken decisions to tighten our belts in many areas so I do not think KDM can afford the upgrade. It is also a lot of work to do in just a few months.”
