Maphumulo’s Iron man going to Italy

The ambitious young man has lined up a number of junior competitions to raise money for his upcoming trip.

Maphumulo bodybuilder Mfanufikile Kunene (29) is training hard as he prepares to jet off to Italy to compete at the Physical Culture Association (PCA) world championship in October.

The Maritzburg-born powerhouse started bodybuilding at the age of 17 years when he was still a farm labourer, milking cows to earn his keep.

“After my parents died, my two brothers and sisters and I were taken in by a farmer and he taught me a lot about farming.

“He enjoyed keeping in shape and I used to lift his weights and I became addicted to it, and here I am today.

“I began competing in 2014 and have won many bodybuilding competitions since. However, because I do not yet have a sponsor, I cannot get the recognition I believe I could be getting,” said Kunene.

Kunene recently won the King Shaka classic, IFBB KZN Ironman and came second at both the Buffalo City Metro and the Arnold Classic World Championship.

He supports himself entirely through competing and training people at KwaDukuza Fitness Centre and he said if he had a sponsor he could enter more competitions.

“This is a very expensive sport, My diet is expensive so I struggle to afford it.

“I only diet when I know that I have a competition coming up, which is not right. I should be sticking to my diet daily so that I could be healthy and fit at all times,” said Kunene.

The ambitious young man has lined up a number of junior competitions to raise money for his upcoming trip.

“Hopefully everything will go according to plan and I will win all my competitions so that I will be able to raise enough go to the world championship,” said Kunene.
