WATCH: Mt Richmore shopping centre open for business

Early bird shoppers were disappointed this morning to discover that the new centre in Mt Richmore would not be open as advertised.

The long awaited Mt Richmore shopping centre in Salt Rock opened its doors this afternoon (Thursday).

Despite a legal battle that saw the centre remain closed this morning and threatened to delay the opening entirely, shoppers were excited to be able to experience the new centre.

This morning, security guards were turning shoppers away – saying they hoped the centre might open tomorrow. Fortunately this was not the case.

This follows ongoing high court cases between KwaDukuza municipality (KDM) and Mt Richmore regarding the development.

Nicholas, Priesa and Hope Mpisane made sure they didn’t miss out on the opening of the new Checkers.

The Courier was approached by a source close to the development who said that KDM had taken the developers to court multiple times, and lost every case.

In the last court appearance, KDM was apparently told by the judge that they had to carry out an on-site inspection and issue a temporary occupancy certificate by the end of business today (Thursday).

The Courier contacted KDM regarding these allegations, but had not yet heard back at the time of publication.

Checkers Mt Richmore assistant manager Ryan Carse said they were overjoyed to be able to open today and were excited to welcome the Salt Rock community to their brand new store.

The new 9 300 square metre centre includes a Checkers, Woolworths Food and a Clicks as its anchor stores as well as two restaurants, a clothing store and a Checkers Liquor.
