Springs Police Station denies shortage of ammunition

CPF chairperson Mike du Toit says Springs Police Station in Ekurhuleni has enough ammunition to go to war, Springs Advertiser reports.

He was responding to the allegations that the station was running low on ammunition and some police officers were stuck behind their desks certifying documents.

It is also alleged some of the officer’s fire arms were confiscated after their shooting compliance certificates expired.

“Allegations that there is not enough ammunition in the Springs police station is not true. Such allegations might cause outrage and fear,” he says.

One police officer at the station, who commented on condition of anonymity, said they had to hand over their guns two weeks ago. It is alleged they could not renew their expired shooting compliance certificates, and more police officers were still expected to lose their guns this week.

“Because we are not armed, we cannot attend to a crisis, so we are forced to help around the office with administrative work for our own safety. We are hoping that the matter would be sorted sooner because we are unable to carry out our responsibilities of protecting the people,” he says.

Springs police spokesperson Captain Johannes Ramphora says he is not aware of any officers from the police station, whose guns were confiscated.
