WATCH: Winter wonderland, it’s snowing in Joburg!

The South African Weather Service (Saws) has confirmed that it is snowing in Johannesburg.

Forecaster Lehlohonolo Thobela told The Citizen that snowfall has been reported in various parts of Gauteng.

“It is snowing in Johannesburg, especially in the southern parts spreading over to the eastern parts. The snow was observed in Soweto, some areas of Roodepoort, Heidelberg, Alberton as well as some areas in east of Johannesburg.

“The snow comes with very cold conditions expected to last until the end of the week,” Thobela said.

Thobela added that the heaviest snowfall in Gauteng was reported in Heidelberg.

Thobela said other provinces also experiences snowfall.

“Much of the snow is also expected over the areas of the high-lying grounds of Mpumalanga,” he said.

Last week, Gauteng Weather warned that another cold front was expected to hit the province, with temperatures expected to drop below freezing in the three major metros.

The last time it snowed in Johannesburg was in August 2012.

Eastern Cape snow

Meanwhile, motorists have been urged to approach Eastern Cape mountain passes with extra caution as snowfalls continue to cause havoc in some of the roads across the province.

Several incidents of vehicles skidding off the road slippery due to snowfall.

Eastern Cape emergency services spokesperson Unathi Binqose said a taxi at the Penhoek pass suffered the same fate at the Lootsberg Pass on the N9 between Graaff Reinet and Middelburg.

“Emergency personnel are on the scene attending to this incidents.

“No mountain passes are closed at this stage but Lootsburg, N9 between Graaff-Reinet and Middleburg as well as the Wappadsberg pass on the R61 between Graaff-Reinet and Cradock R61 along with Penhoek Pass on the N6 between Jamestown and Komani have all be affected with snow,” Binqose said.
