In order to meet South Africa’s vaccination roll-out targets, the Gauteng department of health has instituted pop-up sites to meet the demand.

The provincial government said that this was done to reach as many people as possible.

Adjusted alert level 3

Health Minister Dr Joe Phaahla said during government’s mid-month media briefing that South Africa remains at alert level 3.

At the time, Dr Phaahla said the biggest milestones in the battles were the rollout of jabs for anyone over the age of 18, as well as reaching the 10-million mark of vaccines administered.

While the third wave seemed to slow down, Professor Salim Abdool Karim recently said a fourth wave could be expected in December 2021.

Fourth wave predictions

Professor Karim told Bhekisisa that SA could almost certainly experience the fourth wave, adding that the country must have “a very high level of vaccination to stop the fourth wave”.

A high-level would be between 70%-80% of the population vaccinated. Data suggests the current third wave will end around 26 August, ahead of the 18-and-34 age group’s vaccination rollout.

However, Karim added “it will likely be a small, mini fourth wave”. He said the severity would depend “on a balance between the prospects of a new immune-escape variant, versus how many people” are vaccinated.

“It’s not necessarily critically important that we get to the government’s goal of vaccinating 40 million people by then, it’s more important that we finish phase two [people of 40 years and older] before December.”
