National chairperson of the African National Congress (ANC) Baleka Mbete is outraged over suggestions that she was involved behind items bearing her image and the words “incoming president” making the rounds online.
On Tuesday, Mbete distanced herself from the production or circulation of the items and electronic posters, dismissing them as “mischievous tactics” aimed at tarnishing her reputation among ANC members and society.
“Such acts are clearly the work of so-called lobbyists seeking to erode unity within the organisation and divide the movement by pitting comrade against comrade,” said Mbete.
A poster emerged on social networking site Twitter showing a cap and T-shirt with pictures of Mbete’s face, the ANC logo and the words “BM17, Baleka Mbete, Incoming President”
.
Mbete has called on those behind the campaign to stop using her name as the race for the ANC’s leadership race hots up. The party will elect new national leaders later this year in December at its 54th elective conference.
