Milestone: Over 200,000 vaccine doses administered in 24 hours

The Department of Health shared another vaccination milestone for South Africa. A total of 203,825 Covid-19 vaccines have been administered in the last 24 hours.

Gauteng is leading the charge with 62,040 doses administered, followed by the Western Cape with 36,650 vaccines doses, as of Monday.

In total, 13,673,651 vaccines have been administered as of 6 September 2021.

The cumulative number of recoveries now stands at 2,599,667, with a recovery rate of 92,1%.

Out of those, a total of 122,385 individuals have been fully vaccinated in the last 24 hours: 90,207 people received their second Pfizer jab, while 32,178 people vaccinated with Johnson and Johnson.

Family meeting pending

President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to announce an adjustment to the lockdown regulations this week, following a meeting with the National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC).

He is expected to announce possible changes to the curfew, as well as the protocols for indoor gatherings and allowing offsite alcohol sales.

Government spokesperson Phumla Williams said the president will also address “the way forward to achieve population immunity through vaccination”.

Covid-19 in SA

As of Tuesday, South Africa has recorded a total of 2,829,435 positive cases of Covid-19, with 5,372 cases identified since the last report, as per the NICD.

This increase represents a 12.3% positivity rate. An additional 282 Covid-19 related deaths have been reported, bringing total fatalities to 83,899 to date.

There has also been an increase of 302 hospital admissions in the past 24 hours.

Hospitalisations

On Monday, Dr Frans Skosana shared an infographic as proof that vaccines significantly lower the occurrence of Covid-19 hospitalisations.

The image was compiled using data from the Groote Schuur Hospital in the Western Cape, which shows the total number of patients with Covid-19 currently in the hospital.

Of the 156 patients hospitalised, only three had been vaccinated, while the remaining 153 were confirmed to be unvaccinated.

In addition, of the 66 patients in the intensive care unit (ICU), or the 32 patients on ventilators as of 6 September 2021, none had received their vaccines.
