Public hearings into Eskom’s proposed electricity tariff hike application would commence next week, the National Energy Regulator (Nersa) said.

”NERSA would like to encourage stakeholders and the public to actively participate in this process by submitting written comments and attending or making oral representation at the public hearing to be held 23 and 24 June,” the organisation said.

The hearings would be held at the Nasrec Expo Centre in Johannesburg only. The power utility applied for a 25.3 percent increase in electricity tariffs. It indicated that it needed an additional R32 billion to run the open cycle gas turbines and pay for the diesel supply.

The Nersa had approved a 12.6% increase on April 1. A decision on the new tariff hike would be made at the end of the month.

On Tuesday, chief executive Brian Molefe said cold weather had increased the demand for electricity while maintenance had also put pressure on an already strained power grid. Eskom has implemented loadshedding as it has tried to balance its maintenance schedule and electricity demand.
