The blackouts were implemented from 6am and are likely to continue until 10pm, the power utility said.
”The electricity supply system remains very constrained and vulnerable due to a shortage of generation capacity as several units are currently out of service due to planned and unplanned outages.”
Stage 1 allows for up to 1000MW of the national load to be saved, stage 2 for up to 2000MW, and stage 3 for up to 4000MW.
The power utility implemented stage three power cuts for the second time on Wednesday night. Public Enterprises Minister Lynne Brown on Wednesday said South Africans should brace themselves for a tough two years ahead.
She however added that the intensified blackouts was in no way an indication of a total collapse of the electricity grid. Brown confirmed the country had lost almost a third of its generating capacity due to planned and unplanned maintenance work being done at the country’s power plants.
On Tuesday, the grid lost 9500 megawatts of power due to unplanned outages at power plants.
Eskom has battled to keep the lights on since the collapse of one of its coal storage silos, diesel shortages, and maintenance. The unstable power grid was becoming more vulnerable due to the approaching winter season and the resultant high electricity demand.
