Laerskool Schweizer-Renecker, the North West school that has found itself the source of outrage over a picture that showed a classroom where black children were sitting at the back, separate to their white counterparts, has released a statement saying the photo is “a reflection of a single moment in a classroom”, and not an indication of school policy.
They also explained that the photo reflected an isolated moment and the children do in fact interact and are integrated. Other photos have since emerged showing an integrated classroom on the same day.
“Schweizer-Reneke Primary School is proud of its integrated character. The school’s ethos is built on inclusivity as a reflection of the broader South African society,” says the school governing body’s chairperson, Jozeph du Plessis.
“The governing body does not condone any distinction based on race. Learners from different backgrounds, including race, religion and language, are not merely accommodated but are fully integrated in all aspects of the school environment,” Du Plessis continues.
The statement continues to say that the school staff will be provided with training in “aspects where it appears that integration is not taking place as it should”.
“The governing body will provide support and training where areas lacking in integration are identified. The governing body is committed to integration and to make a positive contribution to society. We will make sure that the necessary resources are available and that staff members have access to information and training,” said Du Plessis.
“The interests of learners remain our first priority and everything possible will be done to ensure a safe and happy environment where they can develop and grow”, the statement concludes.
The teacher was suspended today while the department of education investigates the facts.
