Man jailed for 15 years for gang-rape of girl in Eastern Cape

Three men dragged a girl, who was on her way to her boyfriend, into a nearby house and gang-raped her. 

A 21-year-old man was sentenced to an effective 15 years behind bars for the rape of a 15-year-old girl in Butterworth, said Eastern Cape police in a statement on Tuesday.

Police spokesperson Captain Jackson Manatha said Luyolo Mqeke was sentenced in the Butterworth Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Mqeke and two of his accomplices had gang-raped the teenager at Mission Locality in Dutywa in January 2012. Manatha said the men dragged the girl, who was on her way to her boyfriend, into a nearby house and gang-raped her.

Mziyanda Siphuka, 19, and Nkosiyakhe Tebe, 19, were last year sentenced to 15 years imprisonment each. Acting Butterworth Cluster Commander, Colonel Ncedo Ngwendze welcomed the sentence.

He warned women and children not to walk alone at night.
