Man accused of murdering baby appears in Durban court

The mother attempted to stop the suspect but he allegedly became more violent and stabbed her in the thigh.

A 46-year-old man has appeared in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court, for allegedly killing a 14-month-old baby and attempting to stab the mother, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Thursday.

Colonel Thembeka Mbele said: “It is alleged that on Monday at 7am, the baby boy was sleeping in his room at Indundumo in Clermont while his mother was busy outside the home doing her laundry. The mother heard her child crying hysterically and went to check. She was shocked to find the suspect, who was a relative, was stabbing her little baby.”

Mbele said the mother attempted to stop the suspect but he allegedly became more violent and stabbed her in the thigh. Both victims were rushed to hospital, however the baby later succumbed to his injuries.

The suspect was arrested at the scene by KwaDabeka police for murder and attempted murder and was remanded in custody until February 19 for mental observation.
