The High Court in Johannesburg convicted and sentenced three men who killed a police officer in Johannesburg to life imprisonment and an additional 146 years each for armed robbery and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, police said on Thursday.

Police spokesperson, Captain Mavela Masondo said Nkululeko Ndebele, 39, Siyabonga Mkhize, 42, and Thokozani Mtshali, 43, were sentenced on Wednesday for killing Constable Malesela Frans Ledwaba during a business robbery at Johannesburg Park Station Bakery on March 24, 2015.

Gauteng police commissioner Lieutenant General Elias Mawela has welcomed the life sentences and applauded the investigating team for ensuring that the murderers were arrested, convicted, and sentenced.

He said that the conviction and hefty sentence will send a clear message to those who think of attacking police officers.

The other two accused, Mike Dube and Sfiso Dlomo, escaped from lawful custody on February 6, 2018. Dlomo died due to natural causes while on the run and Dube is still at large. Police are still appealing to anyone who might have information about his whereabouts to please contact the nearest police station, Masondo said.
