But representative for the Centre for Rehabilitation and Education (Care), Irene McKenzie, has called on members of the public not to panic if they spot the animal around Bryanston.
Speaking to The Citizen yesterday, McKenzie confirmed that there have been reports by locals spotting the big male baboon near the Bryanston off-ramp.
“People should call the NSPCA the minute they spot him because it could be that he is either looking for food or his family.
“There is also a possibility that he is from the Cradle of Humankind,” she added.
An official from the NSPCA also confirmed that they had received calls about the baboon, adding they are yet to spot him.
Earlier this year a wild hyena was captured in Blairgowrie, north of Johannesburg.
The NSPCA can be contacted at 011-681-3600 or 011-953-1135.
