Clicks and Woolworths announced on Wednesday they would be closing their doors on Sunday as a “mark of respect” and to allow their employees a chance to either follow the funeral proceedings on national television, or to attend memorial services in local communities.
Click stores would open the next day, December 16, even though it was a public holiday.
Earlier in the week, Massmart announced it’s retail shops would close on the day. The affected shops include: Builders Warehouse, Builders Express, Builders Trade Depot, Builders Superstore, CBW, Cambridge Food, DionWired, Game Stores, Jumbo Cash and Carry, Makro, and Rhino Cash and Carry.
Shoprite, Tile Africa and the Italtile stores – Italtile, CTM and TopT – will also reportedly close on Sunday while Ster-Kinekor announced that the screening of all films has been suspended for the first show on Sunday morning.
Pick n Pay meanwhile has announced it won’t be closing its doors on Sunday for Nelson Mandela’s funeral, but will instead donate all its profits for the day.
