The boy had shot himself in the head with his mother’s service pistol.

A Free State policewoman is being investigated for service pistol negligence after her teenage son shot and killed himself with her gun.

The 15-year-old Lesedi Majara’s dead body was discovered by his mother at their home in Bloemanda, Mangaung on Monday evening. The boy had shot himself in the head with his mother’s service pistol.

Majara was a pupil at Bloemfontein South High School. His mother is a police captain at Kagisanong Police Station, Bloemfontein Courant reported.

According to Free State police spokesperson Ikobeng Hlubi, the service pistol was stored inside a secure locked safe, as required by the firearm rules and regulations. It is unclear how the boy managed to get hold of the gun.

Police investigations were under way, he added.

In another incident, police in KwaMsane, KwaZulu-Natal opened a case of failure to safeguard a firearm after a 13-year-old boy shot himself with his father’s gun in March last year.

It is alleged the boy’s grandmother was approached by the boy while she was at a neighbour’s house.

The boy, who was soaked in blood, told her he had accidentally shot himself after coming across his father’s 9mm pistol which was hidden under a pillow.

The boy was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
