Gideon Stassen and Chantelle Minnott, the couple accused of murdering Stassen’s elderly mother, made a brief appearance in the Kempton Park Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday morning.
The pair were arrested in November last year after the partially decomposed body of 78-year-old Annatjie Stassen was found in the veld in Bronkhorstspruit, Mpumalanga, Kempton Express reported.
She had been reported missing a few days before. Stassen, who had at first denied any involvement in the murder, later told police he and his girlfriend had killed his mother in their Kempton Park home and later dumped her body in the veld.
During their previous appearance last week, Minnott was denied bail and Stassen abandoned his application due to not having a residence he could stay at while the trial continued.
The accused’s lawyer, AJ Masiye, confirmed that Stassen had abandoned his bail application and would re-apply on Monday.
Both the accused are currently in police custody.
