The Hawks have pulled off a huge arrest as two suspects with Mandrax tablets worth in excess of R12 million were arrested on the N1 near Bloemfontein.
Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said the delivery van driver and his female passenger would appear before the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday after their vehicle was found loaded with the mandrax tablets.
Mulaudzi said: “The Hawks received a tip-off about the vehicle which was destined for the Eastern Cape from Gauteng. The vehicle was spotted near the Verkeerdevlei Toll Plaza and the members followed it until they stopped it just before Bloemfontein.
“Upon searching the vehicle the members found nothing but detained the vehicle for a further thorough search at the nearby police station.
“Just underneath the loading zone of the vehicle, the Hawks discovered a self-made compartment with nine bags with 20 plastic packets containing mandrax tablets to the value of R12 million,” Mulaudzi said. “The driver and the passenger, aged 40 and 35 respectively, were subsequently arrested and will face the charge of dealing in drugs when they appear in court.”
