Police are investigating a case of murder after a woman’s body was found decomposing inside her home in Benoni, on the East Rand, on Tuesday.

The 48-year-old victim’s body was discovered at her Brentwood Park home at about 7:15am by her domestic worker, Benoni City Times reported.

“It is alleged that the victim’s domestic worker arrived at her workplace and walked around to the back yard, and noticed the bathroom window was open,” said police spokesperson Constable Zunickha Essakjee.

“She then knocked on the bedroom window but there was no response,” Essakjee said.

The domestic worker then noticed the back door was standing half open, with the keys still hanging on the burglar door. She entered the house and found the victim lying dead in her bedroom.

Essakjee added that the house appeared to have been ransacked, yet nothing seemed to be missing.

“The police suspect that the deceased might have been strangled and, from the smell of the body, the incident may have occurred a few days ago,” said Essakjee.

Essakjee said the domestic worker had last seen the deceased on January 5, as she worked at the house every Tuesday.

No arrests have been made.
