A 19-year-old youth was shot and killed allegedly by his former neighbour in Alberton, East Rand, for playing music too loud, the police said on Sunday.

Peter Robertson died in the Union Hospital in Alberton on Saturday, after he was shot in the head allegedly by Dave Ridgeway, a former neighbour who has since moved out of the area, Colonel Veeshani Arikum said.

Ridgeway allegedly hid in Robertson’s garden in Brackendowns on Tuesday, Arikum said.

When Robertson arrived home with two of his friends, Ridgeway allegedly ordered him to lie on the ground. He then allegedly shot at the three youths.

Robertson was shot in the head. One of his friends was grazed in the leg by a bullet, while the other managed to escape a shot, Arikum said.

Ridgeway then allegedly tried to flee but fell into a pool.

The two friends then took Robertson to the Brackendowns police station, where an ambulance was called, Arikum said. Police found the 66-year-old in the pool and arrested him.

He allegedly continuously complained to the Robertsons about the loud music that their son played in his car and inside his house.

Ridgeway appeared in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

The case was postponed for further investigation.
