A 33-year-old man was arrested on Saturday night in Mahlabatini near Ulundi in KwaZulu-Natal after he shot and killed four men, one of them his father, and wounded four others on Friday.
It is alleged the man and his father were holding a meeting with neighbours to discuss the movement of cattle that had been staying in a kraal on the property, Zululand Observer reported.
Provincial police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said the suspect would appear in the Mahlabathini Magistrates’ Court soon, facing four charges of murder and four of attempted murder.
“A 9mm pistol with one live round of ammunition was also recovered. It will be taken for ballistic tests to establish if it was used in any other crimes,” added Zwane.
In a separate incident, a 35-year-old man accused of severely assaulting his father is set to appear in the Chatsworth Magistrates’ Court in KwaZulu-Natal after his father succumbed to his injuries.
The deceased, Devraj Gounden, died in hospital after he was allegedly assaulted by his son, Andreshan Gounden, on 2 August last year at his home in Mountain View Drive in the Silverglen area.
Gounden was on life support in the intensive care unit at a local hospital at the time of his death.
