A woman was killed and 12 others were injured when a taxi drove into another near Heidelberg in Gauteng on Friday.
Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha said that a taxi had apparently driven into the side of another taxi on the R549 outside Heidelberg at about 6am.
Upon arrival paramedics found 13 injured people, including a critically injured woman.
A helicopter was called in to take the woman to hospital.
“Just as the medical team landed, the patient went into cardiac arrest. The patient was placed on a ventilator and medics started with advanced life support resuscitation,” said Botha.
However, despite the efforts of the paramedics, the woman died at the scene before the helicopter could take off.
The injuries of the other 12 ranged from serious to moderate and they were taken to nearby hospitals.
Botha said the reason for the accident was unknown and authorities were on scene investigating.
