Most of the people ejected from the taxi sustained severe fractures and lacerations.

Fourteen people were injured when a minibus taxi crashed down an embankment along the Wedela road in Carletonville, on the West Rand, on Friday afternoon, Gauteng paramedics said.

ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said paramedics arrived on the scene at about 3.30pm and found several people were ejected from the taxi.

“Two people were still severely trapped in the vehicle. Fire fighters had to use hydraulic rescue equipment to free the two trapped occupants. Ten of the injured sustained critical injuries. Most of the people ejected from the taxi sustained severe fractures and lacerations.”

ER24’s medical helicopter was called to the scene to airlift one of the critically injured. It was understood that the driver of the taxi allegedly lost control near one of the traffic circles, causing the taxi to veer off the road and overturn several times, Vermaak said.
