Free State prison escapees arrested

The pair escaped after overpowering a prison warder and stealing his firearm.

Goedemoed Correctional Centre escapee, Theodorus Botha, was re-arrested on Friday at the entrance of National Hospital in Bloemfontein, in the Free State.

Shortly after Botha’s arrest, Francois Laux from the Hawks said an extensive manhunt was launched in the city on Thursday after Botha was reportedly involved in hijacking a local architect at Preller Square.

Laux said Botha admitted his involvement in the hijacking. He added a flying squad and dog unit were involved in the Friday morning search.

A police helicopter was also brought in.According to Laux, Botha was spotted at the Loch Logan Waterfront and in Dan Pienaar yesterday morning. He has thanked the public for their involvement, Bloemfontein Courant reported.

Botha, who is serving two life sentences for murdering his daughter and a domestic worker, and Johannes Pheko escaped at noon on Tuesday, after they overpowered a warder and stole firearms. They fled with the warder’s Corsa bakkie.

Pheko was arrested yesterday afternoon in Bloemspruit by the police’s Crime Intelligence Unit and the Tactical Response Team.

Botha was reportedly in possession of two firearms when he was arrested. He was apparently trying to sell the warder’s stolen bakkie, when police caught up with him.
