Correctional services spokesman Zama Feni said the 32-year-old officer was found with 27 tablets during a routine search at the prison’s gate as he reported for duty.
“He will appear at the East London Magistrate’s Court tomorrow,” said Feni.
Eastern Cape correctional services commissioner Nkosinati Breakfast said the official was suspended with immediate effect and the department would conduct an internal investigation.
“I would like to issue a stern warning to our officials as well as visitors to our correctional centres to stop smuggling unauthorised items into our correctional centres. Otherwise we will deal harshly with them,” said Breakfast.
“These are the actions of little rotten potatoes who make a mockery of our correctional system and whose deeds overshadow our progressive rehabilitation and offender development efforts, to which most of our officials are committed.”
