Garsfontein police spokesperson Warrant Officer Dave Miller said two robbery suspects were arrested after the shooting yesterday. A fourth suspect escaped, Rekord Centurion reported.

He said four men allegedly gained access to the Burger Avenue residence.

“The men were in the process of taking jewellery from the woman when her husband confronted them. A shoot-out ensued and one of the robbers was shot. He died on the scene,” said Miller.

The other two suspects were arrested not far from the house with the help of response teams, and the fourth robber managed to escape.

One firearm was recovered at the scene.

Miller said police would investigate whether the men were part of a larger syndicate.

He said the husband was hit in the chest, and the wife’s arm was injured. Both were taken to the Netcare Unitas hospital.

In a separate incident, a robber was shot dead by police during a shoot-out in Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria, last Wednesday.

Police spokesperson Captain Tshekiso Mofokeng said: “Five armed suspects entered the Build IT store carrying school bags. They took cash and a DVD player.

“A police intervention unit, acting on a tip-off, confronted the suspects as they were about to leave the crime scene. When they saw the police, they opened fire and the police retaliated, killing one suspect. Another suspect was arrested on the scene. The other robbers escaped in a red Nissan Almera,” added Mofokeng.
