VIDEO: Mpumalanga substation engulfed in flames

A transmitter exploded at about 7pm, causing a part of the substation to erupt into flames.

Video footage has emerged of a fire engulfing Eskom’s Merensky substation in Steelpoort, Mpumalanga, following an explosion.

The Eskom employees at the scene were unable to specify the reason for the transmitter exploding on Sunday night, Steelburger News reported.

The transmitter exploded at about 7pm, causing a part of the substation to erupt into flames.

The Tubatse Fire Department and mine rescue team were at the scene to control the fire.

Entry to the substation was denied due to safety precautions. No injuries were reported.

The blaze was only extinguished the next morning.

In a separate incident, various areas in Randburg were left without electricity earlier this year due to a substation that exploded on April 20.

City Power spokesperson Sol Masolo said the Roosevelt substation exploded at around 10am. “Technicians are still trying to determine the cause,” Masolo said at the time.
