A robber has been shot dead by police during a shootout in Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria.
Police spokesperson Captain Tshekiso Mofokeng said: “Five armed suspects entered the Build IT store carrying school bags, yesterday. They took cash and a DVD player, Rekord North reported.
“A police intervention unit acting on a tip-off confronted the suspect as they were about to leave the crime scene. When they saw the police, they opened fire and the police retaliated, killing one suspect. Another suspect was arrested on the scene. The other robbers escaped in a red Nissan Almera,” added Mofokeng.
He said an undisclosed amount of money was found and two unlicensed firearms were recovered. The Nissan was later found abandoned.
The 29-year-old arrested suspect will appear in court soon.
In a separate incident, a house robber was shot dead by police, while the other was arrested at a house in Terenure, Kempton Park, in Gauteng.
