Four police officers have been arrested in connection with the murder of suspected criminal, Khulekani Mpanza, in Krugersdorp.

The incident occurred on October 19 on Harvey Street in the same area, West of Johannesburg.

Images of it captured on CCTV footage circulated in some sections of the media last weekend.

The footage showed Mpanza being shot in the chest by one of the officers in what has been alleged to be an execution-style killing. Mpanza, who was also armed with a gun that fell from his hand at the time, was killed while fleeing from the police who were responding to a robbery at the hardware store in the area.

Gauteng deputy head of the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), Robbie Raburabu, said the police also obtained the CCTV footage of the incident on October 21. He said the suspects, three men and a woman, were charged with murder based on the evidence that came when a postmortem was conducted on Mpanza’s body. He would not provide full details of the evidence.

“You can pick up a difference from the postmortem on whether a person was shot dead while lying down or standing up,” said Raburabu.

“The suspects were arrested today (Monday) after they handed themselves in. A charge of defeating the ends of justice will be added against them, and possibly, more other charges.”

The arrested officers are stationed at the Krugersdorp police station. IPID spokesperson Grace Langa said the suspects might appear in court later on Monday, depending on how arrangements were made.
