A 24-year-old man is expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court today.

A 24-year-old man is expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court today for the alleged stabbing to death of Chumani Nqakula, the son of Defence and Military Veterans Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula and former cabinet minister Charles Nqakula.

Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant-General Lungelo Dlamini said the man had been apprehended by friends of the dead man.

They brought him into a police station yesterday afternoon. “It seems they were all together when the incident happened. They handed him over to the police.”

Further details around the 23-year-old’s death were not immediately available. However, the defence department reportedly told African News Agency that: “He was allegedly killed by someone he knew on Saturday in Bezuidenhout Valley, Johannesburg. The perpetrator has been detained.”

The ANC, meanwhile, sent its heartfelt condolences to the family, who are long-serving members of the party.
