Provincial police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said the man’s wife stated in an affidavit to police that she and her husband were arguing at their home yesterday when he swung at her with the club, hitting the child in the head, Zululand Observer reported.

The child died later in St Mary’s Hospital.

The 43-year-old man appeared briefly in the Melmoth Magistrate’s Court today and was remanded in custody until his next appearance on November 2.

Zwane said the suspect has not entered a plea and is still seeking legal advice.

In a separate incident, a woman, 21, was shot and killed, allegedly by her father, during an argument in the Kwanele Section of Katlehong on the East Rand in July.

Katlehong police communications officer Captain Mega Ndobe said the two apparently had an argument after the daughter brought her boyfriend home, despite her father telling her not to.

“During the altercation the 63-year-old man allegedly pulled out his licensed firearm and shot his daughter,” added Ndobe.

The woman was declared dead on scene by paramedics.
