UCT’s media liaison and communications manager Patricia Lucas said the body of Zanele Naledi Ntombizodwa Moyo, who was 20, was found in her private off-campus flat.
Lucas said in a statement the cause of the death has not been confirmed.
Moyo was in her second year at UCT, majoring in Political Studies, International Relations and Gender Studies, according to the statement.
The Zimbabwean minister on Saturday tweeted from an account apparently belonging to him:
God's people my angel daughter Zanele is no more.

Gerda Kruger, the executive director of communications and marketing at UCT, said: “The death of any student is a tragedy for the entire university. On behalf of the UCT community I extend heartfelt condolences to Professor and Mrs Moyo and their family, as well as to Zanele’s friends, lecturers and classmates.”
The university has made contact with the family and has offered assistance with funeral arrangements as well as counselling, said Lucas.
