Eighty-year-old arrested for dagga worth R230 000


Police in KwaZulu-Natal have arrested two women – one aged 80 – for possession of dagga worth over R200, 000.

Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said the Upper Tugela Borderline Control police and Ladysmith Crime Intelligence conducted a joint crime prevention operation at the Emmaus area in Bergville on Tuesday.

“During the operation they arrested two women, aged 25 and 80, for the possession of dagga,”Naicker said. “Over 162 kilograms of dagga with a street value of around R230,000-00 was seized. The two suspects were detained and charged for possession of dagga.” They were due to appear in the Bergville Magistrates Court.

KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, said: “We will continue to secure our borders from being used for criminal activities and put criminals behind bars. Drugs destroy lives and we will do everything within our control to remove them from our streets.”
