In the CCTV footage, the EPR reaction officer is seen pouncing on the suspect before dragging him down in Warwick Street at around 4am. The two then scuffled on the ground, Krugersdorp News reported.
“The EPR reaction officer inspected the premises after an attempted break-in had been reported at the same premises at around 1.45am, but the suspects fled the scene,” said Johan Krogh, EPR West Rand general manager.
“While inspecting the premises for a second time, the officer noticed the suspect near an open window. He instructed the suspect to go down on his knees,” added Krogh.
“However, the suspect charged towards the reaction officer, and a struggle for the firearm ensued. The EPR officer managed to fire a shot that fatally wounded the suspect, who died shortly afterwards,” said Krogh.
He commended the guard for putting his life in danger to protect the lives of others.
Randfontein police spokesperson Captain Appel Ernst confirmed the incident.
“Police are investigation a case housebreaking and an inquest docket,” said Ernst.
In a separate incident, a suspect was shot and killed in a shootout between cash-in-transit security guards and four suspects on Claim Street in Hillbrow, Johannesburg, last month.
Hillbrow police spokesperson Sergeant Mduduzi Zondo said four suspects attempted to rob security guards carrying money. Shots were fired and one suspect was shot and killed.
Zondo added one firearm was recovered and the other three suspects fled the scene on foot.
