ANCYL wants young people as councillors

At least 40 percent of municipal councillors should be young people, the ANC Youth League resolved at its 25th national elective conference in Johannesburg on Sunday.

Newly elected deputy secretary general Thandi Moraka presented the league’s resolutions to delegates on the last day of the conference.

“We resolved that at least 40 percent of councillors must be youth. Do not not worry comrades… there is no crisis. The [ANC ] secretary general [Gwede Mantashe] is here to ensure that these resolutions are implemented,” Moraka said as delegates stood up and cheered her statement.

The league further resolved that its regional secretaries work full-time for the organisation to ensure the league’s effectiveness among young people.

To pay more attention to youth issues, the league proposed that a youth summit be held before the end of the year, she said.

“The youth summit or conference will look into youth policies and their relevance.” A social media policy would be drafted to guide league members on using social media platforms.

“The policy should be able to educate members about the ANCYL and the ANC. Such policy will also deal with misconduct by our members on social media,” Moraka said.
