The stand, one of about six supplied by the municipality, was packed with people watching the arriving matriculants when the incident happened, Ladysmith Gazette reported.

It suddenly fell with about 40 people on it. The occupants reportedly ended up in a pile on the ground, surrounded by twisted metal and the screams of the injured.

At least two of the five injured had to be rushed to hospital with severe cuts, and one of them suffered blood loss.

Sharaj Ambulance Services, who were on hand at the farewell, treated three people on the scene, and two were transported to hospital for further treatment.
The reason for the stand’s collapse is being investigated.

At least one other stand was spotted at a popular sports ground on the verge of collapse.
