According to ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring, the wrecked vehicle was found lying on its side near the barrier. Occupants from the vehicle were found lying in two lanes of the road, Kempton Express reported.

On assessment, paramedics discovered that 12 people were injured in the collision, one of them critically. Paramedics immediately began their treatment of the patients while metro services began closing off some of the lanes of the highway.

Treatment and advanced life support interventions were performed on the critically injured taxi driver to stabilise his vital signs. Once treated, the patient was airlifted by the ER24 Helicopter to a nearby hospital for urgent treatment.

The remaining patients on scene were treated for their injuries and thereafter transported to nearby facilities for further care.

The cause of the collision is not yet known, but local authorities were on scene for further investigations. It is believed the taxi was travelling from Johannesburg to Linbro Park when the crash occurred.
