The city had identified land near the Marlboro area to accommodate them, spokeswoman Anda Mbikwana said.

“Officials from the City of Johannesburg and the provincial government are co-ordinating efforts to provide temporary shelter, food and blankets to those affected,” she said.

The Atrac Hall and the Alexandra Stadium changerooms had been identified as the initial premises to temporarily house some 150 people affected.

The fire apparently started during a domestic dispute between a couple on the third floor of Madala hostel in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

“The man was hospitalised as he sustained bruises and burns.”

Another man died of smoke inhalation.

Mbikwana said police were investigating a case of arson.
